Description

Alpine Edelweiss belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is one of the best known alpine flowers. It blooms from July to October. This flower is considered endangered in the Alps because it has become a highly coveted and durable souvenir for plant collectors. For this reason, the plant is now protected by the Nature Conservation. For Edelweiss lovers, this kit allows you to enjoy the plant at home since it is no longer allowed to be collected in the wild.

Contents:

• about 50 plant seeds (lat. Leontopodium alpinum)
• 1 compostable coconut fibre pot
• 1 coconut fibre starting pellet
• 1 planting guide

Cultivation:
Place seeds in the refrigerator for 14 days before sowing. This allows substances that inhibit germination to break down. Soak the coconut pellet in the coconut pot with lukewarm water. Spread some seeds on the substrate and press lightly. Do not cover because edelweiss seeds need light to germinate.
Keep moist (not wet) until germination. Add natural fertiliser immediately after germination. In June plant the coconut pot directly out in the garden or in a larger container.

Location:
Full sun, very bright. Well-drained, nutrient-poor, calcareous to acidic soil. Ideal at an altitude of 500 m above sea level.

Maintenance:
In the pot: water regularly and fertilise from time to time.
In the garden: do not water and do not fertilise. Often edelweiss grown in the garden does not turn bright white but remains grey-bluish. This can be due to insufficient sunlight or unsuitable soil.

Wintering:
Protect edelweiss planted in pots from the cold by mulching with wood chips.

Sowing Schedule: July, August, September, October
Length of germination: about 3 weeks
