Saflax Bonsai - European Larch

This very decorative bonsai has lots of soft, dainty and flexible needles that grow alone on long stalks or in bunches on long stalks. In autumn, they turn golden yellow before falling off. The European larch is deciduous with protruding branches and a slender crown that usually flattens out with age. Its initially smooth bark develops deep furrows over time.

• The only deciduous conifer native to Europe
• Originally from the mountains of Central Europe, this Bonsai probably survived the last Ice Age in the Carpathians

Our tips:

• Stratify seeds in the freezer for a week before sowing for better germination
• Cover the seeds only lightly with soil
• Cover the seed pot with cling foil and poke holes in it so that the soil does not dry out
• Remove the foil for two hours every two to three days to prevent mould growth
• Keep the potting soil moist but not wet
• Ideal germination temperature: 20 to 25° C
• Loves a full sun location with high humidity
• Needs a lot of water, especially in the summer, and should never dry out
• Avoid waterlogging
• Fertilise every two to four weeks from spring to around mid-August
• Frost-resistant and should overwinter outdoors - but protect from strong winds and direct sunlight
• Cover in the winter to keep warm
• Water sparingly on frost-free days
