Saflax Bonsai - Trident Maple

This outdoor bonsai delights with its pretty little leaf shape and beautiful range of colours. Its leaves sprout light orange and become green over the course of the year, until they turn a wonderful orange or flame red in autumn.

Useful information

• The trident maple originates in China, Taiwan and Japan.

Our tips:

• Stratify seeds in the fridge for a week and then let them soak at room temperature for 24 hours to increase germination
• Cover the seed pots with foil and make holes in them so that the soil does not dry out
• Remove foil for two hours every two to three days to prevent mould growth
• Keep potting soil moist but not wet
• Ideal germination temperature: 20 to 25°C
• Protect from direct midday sun
• Water plentifully, but avoid waterlogging
• Application of liquid bonsai fertiliser is recommended every two weeks from the beginning of leaf sprouting until colour begins
• Limited winter hardiness - should be well protected from frost, especially in the first four years
• Water on frost-free days in winter
