Description
Biochar is not a nutrient, but rather the perfect habitat for desirable microorganisms due to its large surface area. It ensures that nutrients are stored and cannot be lost. Fertiliser efficiency can also be significantly increased.
Important:
- A direct application of biochar on soil can lead to negative effects, as the coal first has to “charge” itself with nutrients and microbiology. Only when the biochar is saturated and thus "activated" can it unfold its positive effect. This biochar should therefore only be used in conjunction with an organic fertiliser!
- If biochar is used correctly, the humus content and soil fertility increase rapidly. This is reflected in an improved soil structure (the soil becomes looser), increased water absorption and increased water storage capacity. The plants become more resistant to diseases and pests. Plant growth and yields remain healthy, especially in years with bad weather.
Other suggested applications:
- Compost additive: Material composted with biochar has an intense smell of forest soil. Already in the first year, the finished compost promotes the growth of weak feeders such as carrots, onions, herbs, beans and peas. The treated soil improves year on year (the ‘terra preta effect’). From the second year onwards, you can also expect positive effects on the yields of heavy feeders.
- Manure treatment: Biochar is ideal for stable management as it binds odours and nutrients and improves the stable climate. biochar also promotes the decomposition of manure and humus development in the field. A combination with rock flour has proven to be ideal for providing trace elements and minerals for soil fertility and humus formation.
- Slurry treatment: Adding 4-5 kg of biochar per cubic metre of slurry will make it completely odourless within a few hours. The biochar binds with the nitrogen it contains and will no longer be lost even after the treated slurry has been spread.
